The Role
The Manager – Corporate Communications, based in Los Angeles, will join a small, nimble group of communicators helping formulate, execute and sustain a corporate communications strategy for Netflix. We are point on building and protecting the brand, crafting business, technology and content stories that advance our business goals and awareness as well as handling crisis situations.
This newly created role will primarily support content-related efforts including licensing announcements, as well as building and pitching stories around trends/new initiatives in content that advance Netflix's business narrative. He/she will work closely with the Publicity, Consumer PR and Content teams at a time when we are investing more than $6 billion next year in original and licensed content. While much of the work will be US-focused, this individual also will support content-related efforts in Canada, Australia and New Zealand as they arise.
You need to:
• Be a strategist and a tactician: You can put together the big picture pitch and work the details to ensure successful execution.
• Have a head for business: You have corporate experience, understand issues that could affect our business and reputation.
• Love entertainment: Experience in corporate communications at a Hollywood studio, with strong understanding of network/studio operations and PR needs.
• Have good PR chops: You can conceptualize and pitch stories angles that advance Netflix's business positions around content. Strong relationships with industry trade and general business media a strong plus.
• Write and think like a journalist: Strong writing skills reflect strong thinking skills and an ability to process information to its essential bits. You'll be writing press releases, blogs, messaging, pitches and other things, in addition to clear and concise emails.
• Be an empathic mediator: Netflix is known for doing things differently in an industry not entirely comfortable with change. A key element to success in this role is managing the nuances of complicated partner relationships where we can have a different view of PR approaches. That applies to working cross-functionally as well.
• Be a self-starter: Netflix is famous for our ''freedom & responsibility'' culture, where you get a lot of freedom to make decisions as well as the responsibility to use good judgment. You have to be comfortable working independently yet closely with a manager in another office (role is in Los Angeles, manager is in Los Gatos, California.)
Qualifications
The successful candidate for this Corporate Communications role will likely possess between 5-8 years of real experience in media, corporate or agency settings. Of particular interest are candidates with backgrounds in journalism who are used to working in a fast-paced environment that requires agility, a strong BS detector (for application internally and externally), and intense focus.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Manager, Corporate Communications will report to the Director, Corporate Communications.
