Job Summary:
ABC News Radio is looking for a Director of News Programming to lead its newsroom of award-winning anchors, correspondents, writers, and contributors. ABC News Radio provides news content to over 1,650 radio stations nationwide, reaching more than 73 million listeners weekly.
Responsibilities:
• Oversees the vision and strategy for all ABC News Radio editorial coverage in order to consistently produce high-quality, relevant content that differentiates ABC.
• Serves as the primary point of contact with radio station program directors in order to anticipate and quickly respond to station needs. Models a service mindset that preserves our affiliates' and partners' trust.
• Drives and rewards creativity, innovation and out-of-the-box thinking that leads to differentiation and success in storytelling and smart journalism.
• Promotes an inclusive culture.
• Ensures enterprise reporting that is engaging, accurate, fair and straightforward.
• Responsible for hiring of newsroom talent – on air and off – and ensuring evaluation, training and career development. Provides regular feedback and mentoring.
• Occasional travel for industry conferences and station visits.
• Understands the requirements of managing a multi-jurisdictional union newsroom and represents ABC News Radio in union negotiations.
• Works collaboratively with Non-News Programming, Podcast Programming and Business Development executives to drive divisional success and meet financial goals.
• Must innovate and pivot to changing consumer and client needs by constantly evaluating our news products, launching new initiatives and sun setting others.
• Oversees programming deliverables to not only broadcast but various digital licensees.
• Works with affiliate sales team to develop and deliver the quality news products that our stations expect.
• Immerses in details of production workflow and tools alongside producers and Operations team as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
• Must demonstrate impeccable news judgment.
• A leadership approach that fosters collaboration, innovation and inclusion.
• At least 12 years of experience in editorial roles, supervising and leading journalists.
• Proven experience in radio/audio newsgathering and production.
• Deep understanding of local news radio and the industry.
• Passion for delivering premium news to a variety of broadcast, digital, and emerging platforms.
• Must have proven experience leading in a fast-paced news environment and is comfortable working collaboratively across multiple departments and disciplines, often under deadline.
• Comfortable taking a data-driven approach to programming decisions.
• Experience managing personnel across multiple platforms.
• Experience developing and managing annual budgets.
Required Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
