Job Title: Sport Psychologist
Reports To: Assistant General Manger
Employ Status: Regular, Full Time
Baltimore Orioles Minor League Baseball Affiliates, US Naval Academy and University of Maryland
Job Summary:
This position is a consortium experience between the Baltimore Orioles Minor league affiliate teams, the US Naval Academy and the University of Maryland. The primary role of this position is to develop and implement a mental skills curriculum for two Baltimore Orioles Minor League Baseball (MiLB) affiliate teams. In addition, clinical psychology and sport performance services will be provided for student-athletes and military academy members at the University of Maryland and US Naval Academy. Under the supervision of two licensed providers/Certified Mental Performance Coach, this position will be first point of contact for players and staff seeking assistance and/or information related to performance, mental health, and wellness.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsibilities for working with the MiLB teams include:
• Development of mental skills curriculum for minor league teams
• Implementation of mental skills curriculum:
• Provide individual and group skill building sessions
• Educate staff on issues that affect players and coaches
• Attend practices, games, training room and other facilities regularly
• Provide reports of utilization and common concerns
• Consult with sports medicine team
• Meet with new players and staff to provide information on scope of services
• Brief counseling and performance interventions for players
• Provide appropriate referrals for mental health concerns for players and staff
• Consult with supervisors for program development and implementation
• Responsibilities for working at the University of Maryland and US Naval Academy
• Provide psychotherapy for individuals, focusing on the mental health needs of student-athletes
• Provide brief counseling and performance interventions for student-athletes
• Provide group talks and educational workshops for teams
• Weekly supervision
• Work within larger system of standards and criteria to ensure overall compliance with services and treatment provided within the MLB and NCAA
• Work with supervisors to provide support on an on-call basis
Qualifications:
• Must be able to travel an estimated 3 to 4 weeks per year and/or as needed
• Ability to work in a medical department environment and comply with all confidentiality requirements
• Proven ability to effectively present to large groups on sport psychology related topics
• Participate in weekly supervision
• Ability to be on call
• Must reside or be willing to relocate to Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area in order to respond to department needs effectively and efficiently
• Ability to develop relationships with athletes, coaches and staff within professional and collegiate organizations
Education
and/or Experience
• Doctorate (Ph.D./Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology with education in sport psychology; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. License eligibility to practice mental health in Maryland is required.
Position Specifics:
• One year, full-time contract position
• This position entails night and weekend work coverage and occasional travel
• Reporting structure within MiLB organizations, USNA and UMD
