The CBS News Political Unit is seeking a creative and enterprising Associate Producer with strong research skills and political reporting background to be an integral member of our unit. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of journalistic standards, a keen attention to detail, and excellent newsgathering & writing skills, as well as a strong knowledge of, and passion for covering campaign politics. They must also be calm and efficient during breaking news-- and a collaborative member of a newsroom.

Additional duties include:

• Exercise editorial judgment in selection of political content

• Prepare research packets for primary and election night coverage, as well as maintain political calendar of events

• Logging/exacting political feeds

• Learning how to shoot video for political coverage, including events, live shots, interviews and transmission via LiveU technology

• Develop political contacts with campaigns , engage in political reporting for unit, which includes all CBS News digital and linear platforms including CBS Streaming & CBS Radio

• Able to quickly turn around critical information for air, verifying its accuracy while simultaneously getting interviews and video coverage of the news event

• Exercise editorial judgment in pitching political stories for all platforms

• Effectively juggle communicating information to the senior leadership at each news platform, control rooms, assignment desks, and their field team

• Aide and work with correspondents, producers, digital journalists and other members of the Political Unit in a supporting role

• Work with CBS News social media team on providing content from Political Unit

• Assist w/ managing the political calendar for the Political Unit

Skills
/Experience:

• The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, deal with intense deadline pressure, and react with smart programming ideas and creative storytelling

• Strong communication skills

• You are a self-starter while also taking direction from senior producers and political director

• Must be able to work under deadline in a fast paced environment

• Strong editorial judgment and excellent writing skills

• Understanding of newsgathering and live streaming, and other digital transmission technology

• STRONG research skills and familiarity with public and private records databases, such as Lexis Nexis, AP Planner and campaign databases

• Must be willing to work flexible hours (possibly late nights & weekends as needed

• Comprehensive knowledge of current political events, current events and emerging trends
