Deputy Managing Editor for Digital Coverage

CBSNews.com is hiring a deputy managing editor to help oversee digital coverage in the evening hours, from 3pm-11pm ET Monday through Friday. This role will steer breaking news coverage while also determining which high-interest stories to prioritize across the U.S., world and politics verticals. This is a hybrid role, with roughly 2 days a week in office required at present, but subject to change.
The ideal candidate is a player/coach, quick to jump in to live-blog or write stories while also assigning, editing and advising the nighttime team over the course of the shift. This role oversees 2-3 direct reports and works with other members of the digital team, as well as beats, units and shows across CBS News and Stations. This role requires strong news judgment and an ability to write and edit clear, accurate, factual copy and craft compelling, SEO-savvy headlines on deadline in a fast-paced environment. The deputy managing editor should also have experience making strategic, data-informed decisions. Scrupulous attention to detail, a cool head under pressure, and excellent communication skills are essential.
You will need to work some holidays and shift your schedule as needed.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
• Manage and edit content, determining the stories to prioritize and assign, editing to the highest standards and mentoring writers so that their work improves over time.
• Write stories and run live blogs.
• Make proactive decisions on coverage plans.
• Ensure coverage aligns with CBS News standards and show good judgment in handling sensitive topics, seeking guidance when needed.
• Be vigilant about incorporating the website's best practices, including SEO guidance, to stay competitive in a fast-paced online news environment.
• Coordinate on push alerts, video and other elements.
• Field pitches from reporters, producers and correspondents and work with them to craft their stories for the website.
• Work with senior management to continue developing strategy and communicating standard processes on breaking news coverage across shifts.
• Manage 2-3 direct reports and work cross-functionally with other members of the nighttime team.
• Assist with scheduling and other operational responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
• 5 years of experience in a digital breaking news environment
• You are a skilled editor who can work quickly to reshape copy
• Excellent editorial judgment: You are comfortable deciding when to launch a story and when to hold back – and you know when to get a second opinion from standards, legal or senior management.
• Understanding of and experience implementing standard methodologies for editorial SEO
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $120,000.00 - 130,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is bonus eligible.
