CBS News’ Growth & Engagement team is hiring a deputy managing editor to help oversee digital coverage from 1pm-9pm ET Sunday through Thursday. This role will steer breaking news coverage, grow viewership and help oversee the digital strategy of primetime shows, special reports and events covered across CBS News and CBS News 24/7. This is currently a hybrid position with at least 2 days/week in office required at present, but subject to change.
The ideal candidate is a player/coach, quick to jump in to send push alerts, clip video segments and package content for YouTube and other platforms. This role oversees 2-3 direct reports and works collaboratively with CBSNews.com, beats, units and shows across CBS News and Stations. This role requires strong news judgment and an ability to write and edit clear, accurate, factual copy and craft compelling, SEO-savvy headlines on deadline in a fast-paced environment. The deputy managing editor should also have experience making strategic, data-informed decisions. Scrupulous attention to detail, a cool head under pressure, and excellent communication skills are essential.
You may need to work some holidays and shift your schedule as needed.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
• Manage 2-3 direct reports and work cross-functionally with other members of the nighttime team on breaking news and other coverage, assisting with scheduling and other operational responsibilities as needed
• Assign content and provide mentorship to Growth & Engagement team members based on handling news of day, trends and upcoming events, helping oversee a strategic content calendar to supercharge our YouTube channels and other partnerships
• Coordinate nighttime breaking news, jumping in to write, push, clip and edit content when necessary to ensure we remain competitive in a fast-paced online news environment
• Edit content to the highest standards and coach producers to improve their work over time, while working alongside other departments to improve workflows
• Ensure coverage aligns with CBS News standards and show good judgment in handling sensitive topics, communicating with our Standards, Legal and Race & Culture departments and other leadership for approvals as warranted
• Clip and publish video segments, write SEO-friendly, compelling headlines and descriptions, choose strong thumbnails; create long-form video content
• Oversee all video content uploaded to CBSNews.com, YouTube and Paramount (and other necessary OTT partner platforms) and help program OTT shelves
• Lead all aspects of nighttime push strategy, ensuring the team sends concise, accurate and error-free push alerts across platforms, including app, desktop, OTT, email, text and instant messages (like WhatsApp)
• Pitch articles and coordinate with editorial distribution partners (NewsBreak, Reddit, Flipboard, etc.), leading nighttime coverage plans and breaking news distribution
• Be vigilant about curating and updating CBS News and Stations YouTube channels, using tools within the platform and third parties to help grow audiences
Qualifications
• You have 5 years of experience in a digital breaking news environment and proven ability to react quickly as news develops
• Familiarity with editing software (Adobe Premiere, PhotoShop, etc.)
• You’re a strong writer and self-editor who can move quickly and with precision
• You're familiar with analytics platforms like Adobe, Chartbeat, YouTube Studio, etc.
• You know how to craft a compelling headline and description following SEO standard processes
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $120,000.00 - 130,000.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
