Title: Digital Archivist for Electronic Musician
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Job Type: Full-Time
Overview: We are seeking a skilled Digital Archivist to manage and preserve the extensive digital and physical archives of a renowned electronic musician with a career spanning over 30 years. This position will involve overseeing nearly 100 TB of digital data, including Pro Tools sessions, Adobe Premiere project files, and video archives in various formats. The role will also involve managing physical backups across multiple formats, from cassette tapes to 2'' analog tapes, ensuring that the artist's body of work is preserved and accessible for future use.
Key Responsibilities:
Digital Archive Management:
*Build a new system to organize, manage, and maintain nearly 100 TB of digital data, including Pro Tools session files, Adobe Premiere project files and Adobe Lightroom files.
*Manage hard drive arrays and RAID 1 technology, ensuring data safety and redundancy.
*Meet Production Deadlines:
*Deliver and receive digital assets for production (to video / audio editors, mixing engineers, or mastering engineers).
*Keep track of asset version history and project deadlines
Metadata & Searchability:
*Create an internal catalog system where each asset gets a unique identification number
*Maintain detailed metadata for all files to ensure proper organization, searchability, and accessibility of archived materials.
*Ensure consistent file naming conventions and classification standards across all media types.
Physical Media Preservation:
*Catalog, digitize, and preserve physical backup formats including cassette tapes, DAT tapes, ADAT tapes, MiniDiscs, and 2'' 24 track analog tapes.
*Coordinate the safe storage and environmental management of physical media to ensure long-term preservation.
*Oversee the transfer of physical media to digital formats, ensuring archival quality and integrity.
Backup & Redundancy:
*Implement and maintain robust backup solutions, both on-site and off-site, for digital and physical media.
*Perform regular data integrity checks and backups to ensure long-term accessibility.
Collaboration & Communication:
*Work closely with the musician and their team to identify priority materials and curate key archives based on creative and historical significance.
*Liaise with external vendors for specialized media transfer or restoration services when necessary.
Stay Current with Best Practices:
*Stay informed of the latest advancements in digital archiving, preservation technology, and media restoration to future-proof the archive.
*Upscale video assets using AI platforms if only lower-quality archives are available
Qualifications:
Location: Must be based in or willing to relocate to Los Angeles, CA.
Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in digital archiving or a similar role, preferably within the music, entertainment, or media industries.
Technical Expertise:
*Proficiency in managing Pro Tools session files.
*Proficiency with Adobe Premiere project files for video archiving.
*Experience with Adobe Lightroom project files for photo archiving.
*Familiarity with hard drive arrays, RAID 1 configurations, and large-scale digital data management (100 TB+).
Detail-Oriented: Ability to handle complex datasets, media transfers, and physical media with meticulous attention to detail.
Problem-Solving Skills: Capable of troubleshooting issues related to data integrity, hardware failure, and legacy format compatibility.
Organizational Skills: Exceptional ability to maintain organized and logically structured archives.
Communication: Effective communication skills to collaborate with the musician, team members, and external vendors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of modern digital preservation techniques and cloud storage solutions.
