This is a Full Time Job
The Managing Editor, Medical Unit is responsible for medical coverage on all ABC News platforms and has input into virtually every ABC News medical story on every platform, GMA, World News (weekday and weekend) Newsone, Digital, Nightline, and Radio. As a result the head of the Medical Unit is constantly in touch with Executive Producers and seniors at all platforms where multiple stories come directly from the Medical Unit.
Responsibilities:
The Managing Editor works closely with Chief Medical Editor Dr. Jen Ashton coordinating all ABC News Medical coverage. In addition this person will guide our shows and correspondents in medical coverage including guidance on what stories to cover. He/she will provide supporting medical facts and medical experts for interviews.
During breaking news the managing editor will execute a coverage plan for the medical unit. In addition this person will secure anchors and correspondents access to hospitals, doctors and patients during the coverage.
Develop and create original content for all ABC NEWs shows and digital platforms related to medicine and health.
The Managing Editor also runs the Medicine and Media rotation for doctors. Through this program ABC News has young doctors from the top medical schools around the country on our team. From 2 to 5 doctors who are each with us for 4 weeks; they are interested in medical journalism and upping their communication skills, we need their medical training and expertise. This program needs constant organization and attention which the Medical Editor handles – recruitment and scheduling, interviews, and management.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum six years of experience inclusive of academic and professional in medicine and journalism or related fields
• Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Demonstrated experience producing broadcast and digital content including writing scripts, shooting and editing video
• Ability to generate original story ideas and produce original stories for broadcast.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Eight or more years of experience working in a medical unit at a network, cable channel, or top 10 news market
• Developed and produced broadcast or web series
• Experience managing a team of two or more people
Required Education
• BA or BS from a 4 year accredited college or university
Preferred Education
• Advanced degree in medicine or related field
