The Content Analyst position is located within Content Rights Management [CRM], a subdivision in the Programming Department that services the Programming, Legal, Business Affairs, Production, Communications, and Affiliate Sales Divisions of ESPN. CRM functions as ''information brokers'' related to ESPN's content rights and usage. The Content Analyst is expected to perform multiple analytical and clearance tasks, focusing on the final three of CRM's six listed business functions: 1) rights & clearance assistance on restricted content and for major ESPN programming initiatives; 2) support of ESPN/ABC Sports' footage licensing business; 3) capture data related to ESPN's programming rights, programming library, and footage rights, 4) research and analyze content to support negotiations and scheduling for ESPN's Programming & Acquisitions Department; 5) track ESPN's footage and photo usage, 6) issue internal and external News Usage Advisories to Content Production areas.
Responsibilities
• Analysts perform a variety of tasks under the direction of CRM Senior Management and in consultation with ESPN Programming and ESPN Legal. Content Analysts contribute in the following areas, with a focus on (a), (b), (c), (e), and (f), listed below:(a) provides clearance and content guidance on programming, TV highlights, photo, and audio rights to ESPN Studio, Event, & Digital Production, Brand Migration, ESPN Films, Business Affairs, Communications, VOD publishing, and Affiliate Marketing;
• (b) maintains ESPN's Esheet tracking database or similar content logging records, monitoring all TV & Digital content tracking to improve compliance and data integrity for all footage and photo reporting related to News & Info programming and ESPN anthology programming.
• (c) conducts in-depth content analysis of footage and photo usage to support contract negotiations, to monitor ESPN's usage vs contractual limits, analyze ESPN's coverage and product offerings, and to prepare usage reports for internal clients and external rightsholders;
• (d) assists CRM's Footage Licensing department on clearance and content requests, including performing footage library research and trafficking content and invoices as needed;
• (e) investigates clearance issues and questions for new programs, offerings, and platforms;
• (f) creates and distributes News and Information Media Advisories both internally and externally to the media industry;
• (h) reviews and maintains (as needed) the clearance status of the ESPN archival programming library;
• (i) enters programming and digital publishing contracts into ESPN's programming contract database;
• (j) reviews outgoing content sent to ESPN Films producers to identify clearance issues;
• (k) responds to requests for clearance of, or information about, rights-restricted content
• Under the direction of CRM Senior Management, assists on an array of content research and clearance projects, including year-in-review programs, proposed content distributions, anti-piracy efforts, or content investigations (including screening, reviewing program logs, or reviewing digitally-published content).
• Develops an understanding of ESPN domestic network programming schedules, ESPN TV and digital programming and content services, ESPN production procedures, and ESPN programming & acquisition strategy.
Basic Qualifications
• At least one year of experience (internships and/or post school work experience) working with business intelligence software (e.g., Business Objects, MicroStrategy, Tableau, R Studio, Adobe Analytics, etc.), data visualization, and/or statistical modeling for the collection, analysis, presentation and dissemination of business information (recent graduates with relevant educational background or in Computer Science are also welcome to apply, but note that this is not a computer programing position)
• Full proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint (or similar spreadsheet & presentation software)
• General knowledge of statistics including predictive modelling, regression analysis and text analytics
• Solid knowledge of sports & sports history
• Solid presentation and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• 2 to 3 years of experience with: a sports data organization; TV or Digital News or Sports Production; Digital media production or publishing; Television programming, marketing, commercial operations, or footage licensing; media rights organization or rights & clearances; or a sports league or sport governing body
• Strong organizational & analytical skills, including prior experience with project leadership
• Broad knowledge of the sports industry, leagues and governing bodies
• Experience modelling and data wrangling in R, Python, SQL, D3 or similar data-driven technologies
• Experience or relevant education in text mining and topic analysis
• General understanding of machine learning applications in a business and media setting
• Fluency in Spanish
Required Education
• Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, Science, Mathematics, Philosophy, Communications, Journalism, Library Science, Business, or Sports Management
Preferred Education
• Course work related to copyright law, rules & regulations, or business management; Course work and software proficiency related to statistics, data visualization, business intelligence, natural-language processing, audience measurement or social media analytics.
