Elle is seeking a talented, motivated, and detail-oriented Deputy Art Director to join our creative team. This position reports to and will work closely with the Design Director to evolve the look of the magazine and website, and design front-of-book stories and packages. You will work closely with the art and photo departments, editors and web team to see stories through from concept to execution. The ideal candidate must possess a collaborative spirit and be a conceptual thinker and an excellent communicator. This person must have a strong interest in fashion, beauty and culture, and have a high level of design sophistication and the ability to consistently meet deadlines with inspiring ideas and a great attitude. Must have experience in assigning illustration and art direction for photo-shoots and managing multiple projects on deadline.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitate art direction evolution (visuals and design) for the title.
• Design and layout feature stories, packages and special sections.
• Design for marquee web features, videos and social assets.
• Assist in leading meetings.
• Work closely with staff designers and freelancers, photo editors, text editors and web team members to facilitate great layouts.
• Mentor the junior members of the art department.
• Manage the art team's workload effectively through delegation.
• Keep art department on time with workflow and deadlines.
• Commission illustration for FOB features.
• Art direction for FOB shoots.
• Mark up color for features and work with designer on FOB color approval.
• Create presentations for the EIC.
QUALIFICATIONS
• 7-10 years of fashion magazine, editorial design or fashion-focused agency experience
• Sophisticated design abilities and typographic skills.
• High proficiency with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge and InDesign and Figma are essential.
• Excellent knowledge of magazine design, typography, photography and illustration.
• Top contacts with photographers and illustrators within the magazine industry.
• Meticulous eye for detail.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to think laterally and creatively to come up with great design solutions quickly and efficiently in a demanding and challenging environment.
• Extremely well organized and good at managing and juggling projects – big and small.
• An understanding of the aesthetic and editorial style and tone of Elle
This role is based in the NYC office 3 days per week minimum, no remote exceptions.
This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The base salary for this role $93,000 - $102,000. The base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
