Videographer
We are looking for a videographer who can bring creative and fresh ideas to the Houston Chronicle newsroom, along with excellent technical skills and news judgment in our fast-paced environment. This collaborative journalist will be responsible for shooting and editing full-length videos for our digital platforms, as well as developing short-form videos for off-platform.
What will you do?
• Shoot and edit videos for our video series and major projects, including long-form and short-form videos. These projects include our recurring video series ''City of Food''
• Shoot videos for breaking news and daily news events as needed for both on- and off-platform
• Work alongside the I-Team and other newsroom departments to develop video that accompanies investigative and enterprise stories
• Work with the newsroom to formulate and produce future video series, as well as other video projects that tell the story of Houston through visuals
• Plan and schedule video shoots, including interviews with sources and subjects for the videos
• Oversee maintenance of video equipment
• Monitor industry trends and pitch creative ideas that build audience
What will it take to be successful?
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with editors, other journalists, the audience team and the data visualization team to fulfill our mission of telling impactful stories that attract new subscribers to HoustonChronicle.com and retain existing ones. The ability to shoot and edit video in Adobe Premiere and/or Final Cut Pro X is a must, as well as is the ability to shoot still photography for use in video. This position requires:
• 3-5 years of newsroom or media experience, or equivalent
• Bachelor's or master's degree, multimedia- and journalism-focus preferred
• The ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including work on nights and weekends, as well as the ability to easily carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and work in all weather conditions
• A strong working knowledge of social media, including how vertical video can be used to introduce potential subscribers to our journalism
• A valid driver's license and a near-perfect driving record
• Exceptional ability to operate digital editing tools
• A self-starter who can organize, prioritize and work under pressure
• Ability to speak Spanish a plus
