Job Title: Manager, Payroll
Department: Finance & Accounting - Payroll
Reports to: VP - Finance and Accounting & Controller
Position Summary:
The Payroll Manager will act as the function lead reporting to the VP – Finance and Accounting and be responsible for preparing and processing payroll for all Lakers' entities including multi-location, multi-state environment which includes players, exempt, non-exempt, and seasonal staff members. In addition to their role as a leader within the F&A Department, the Payroll Manager will collaborate with HR, Legal, and Basketball Operations to ensure efficient and effective payroll operations and maintaining compliance within applicable jurisdictions.
Key metrics used to evaluate performance:
• Timeliness and accuracy of payroll, related audits, and League reporting
• Advance utilization of technology as it pertains to 'Essential Functions' section outlined below.
• Performing duties independently without heavy supervision while continuing to display initiative
• Use of analytical and critical thinking skills
• Ability to build cross-functional relationships and establish themselves as a positive team contributor.
Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities):
PAYROLL (Semi-Monthly)
• Oversee the timely processing of the end-to-end payroll process for all players and staff, verifying all payroll data, ensuring proper capturing of gross, taxes, adjustments, and deductions (per diem, hotel, fringe benefits, etc.)
• Accurately and timely process, submit and oversee all payroll taxes to governmental entities, including multiple states based on their periodic deadlines.
o Work with ADP or the agency directly to resolve tax invoices from local, state or federal government entities.
• Process, maintain, and reconcile electronic time and attendance system, including the collection, preparation, and calculations of timesheets.
• Maintain records of payroll data (i.e., direct deposit, W-4 information, new hire reporting, benefit changes including 401K, GTL, commissions, bonuses, per diem, fringe benefits, garnishments, etc.), employee information, and compensation details, with an emphasis on confidentiality and integrity
• Coordinate with external payroll vendors to ensure service quality and resolve any issues.
• Review the reconciliation for payroll related general ledger accounts working with accounting team.
• Prepare and manage the preparation of payroll related information for all required audits.
MANAGEMENT
• Develop methods and procedures to ensure accurate payroll reporting by embracing an approach of constant process improvement and efficiency.
• Lead and manage the payroll group, providing guidance, support, and development opportunities.
• Provide strategic direction for departmental deliverables as well as staying current on any industry or legal changes impacting payroll and payroll taxes.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage and hour laws and best practices.
BENEFITS
• After the completion of each payroll, prepare the timely funding of benefits (HSA, FSA, 410K, and garnishments) and insurance billing to reconcile to the related payroll reports.
• Monitor and reconcile FSA weekly invoices.
• Monitor the 401K eligibility statuses for all new hires and ensure proper adherence to the IRS contribution limits and changes for all retirement plan types.
• Coordinate with third-party vendor to prepare, review, and submit monthly ACA, 1095-Cs, and 1094-C reporting.
• Oversee and manage the annual 401K to ensure timely processing of 5500.
Responsibilities subject to change based on organizational needs and direction from management.
Education/ Certification:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management or Business Administration (required)
• CPP license (preferred)
• Other Payroll or Benefits certifications a plus
Previous experience:
• Minimum of 8 years' experience in payroll, benefits, and accounting
• Prior knowledge of ADP Workforce Now or other comparative payroll platforms
• Previous experience in sports and entertainment industry (preferred)
• Experience withholding obligations for U.S. citizens working abroad and Non-Resident Aliens working in the United States (a plus)
• An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
Technology Capabilities:
• Experience with financial, payroll, and HRIS software systems
• Advanced level knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Excel)
Knowledge, skills, abilities:
• Extensive knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal controls, and payroll taxes
• Health and welfare plan benefit management, including developing and managing a self-funded medical plan as well as extensive knowledge of pension and 401(k) administration.
• Proven technical knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations impacting human resources, payroll, and employee benefits, as well as prior experience in benefit compliance testing, year-end reporting and supplying all data for annual 5500 returns.
• Experienced in the following areas: compensation, benefits, compliance, COBRA, HIPPA, ERISA and ACA regulations.
• Proven communication skills, verbal and written.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
The pay range for this role is $90,000 to $115,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and certifications.
