Job Description
Associate Editor/Graphics
National Geographic – Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution
The Associate Editor/Graphics works within the National Geographic magazine production team and has multiple roles: they follow established procedures to ensure print maps and graphics meet precise print production standards and prepare those assets for delivery across multiple teams; they assist Senior Graphics Editors in the execution of their print maps and graphics, as well as converting same to digital formats for web use; they create small, fast-turnaround graphics for the magazine's website.
The ideal candidate will have strong cartography and/or data visualization and/or illustration skills, experience creating graphics and charts, and is comfortable consulting outside experts to aid in the execution of maps and graphics.
The responsibilities of this position include:
• In concert with Senior Graphic Editors, review and modify print graphic files
• Prepare and deliver print assets to multiple teams
• Coordinate with other editorial teams (text, photography, video, social media)
• Conceive, research, report, develop and design digital news graphics
Required Qualifications:
• 2+ years of professional experience in cartography, information graphics, data visualization or anatomical illustration (Internship experience included)
• Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
• Knowledge of GIS softwares (ArcGIS, etc), or technical/anatomical illustration skills, or data visualization techniques
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Exceptional organizational and time-management skills
• A keen attention to detail

Preferred:
• Ideal applicants will have experience in visual journalism (storytelling through thematic maps, infographics, or data visualization)
• Experience working in fast-paced, matrixed environment as a team player
• Candidates in the Washington, D.C. area are preferred
EDUCATION
• BA/BS required, preferably in journalism, visual communication, fine or applied arts, cartography, or one of our core topic areas (science, environment, history)
