Audio Engineer (Part-Time, Temporary) – Washington, DC
NPR seeks a part-time Audio Engineer to provide technical support for live broadcasts, audio restoration, and troubleshooting. This role works closely with journalists, producers, and engineers to ensure high-quality audio production and delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
• Engineer live broadcasts and pre-recorded content in high-pressure environments.
• Identify and repair impaired audio while adhering to NPR’s quality standards.
• Mix audio to loudness standards using tools like equalizers, compressors, and noise reduction software.
• QC, mix, and sweeten podcasts using AVID Pro Tools and DAVID Systems MTE.
• Monitor inbound/outbound audio streams, troubleshoot technical issues, and respond to schedule changes.
• Support journalists and train staff on technical facilities and remote recording equipment.
• Provide technical support for remote events, including venue assessments.
• Stay updated on emerging audio broadcast equipment and workflows.
Required Skills:
• 2 years of technical experience in audio production (broadcast, live sound, music recording, theater, or post-production).
• Strong grasp of audio engineering fundamentals and signal flow.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and multitask effectively.
• Exceptional communication and training skills.
• Proficiency in identifying and correcting audio impairments.
Preferred Skills:
• Broadcast experience, ideally in public media.
• Expertise with IP audio transmission and smartphone audio techniques.
• Proficiency in AVID Pro Tools, mixing consoles, and automation tools.
