Advance Scouting Intern
Department: Advance Scouting
Reports To: Coordinator, Major League Operations
Location: St. Petersburg, FL
Description: The Tampa Bay Rays are seeking two Advance Scouting Interns in 2023. We welcome applicants from a variety of academic, professional, and athletic backgrounds. This role will primarily be tasked with conducting research and providing content for Major League advance reports throughout the Major League season. These individuals will also have an opportunity to assist in additional Baseball Operations projects and collaborate with various departments, gaining exposure in other areas beyond Advance Scouting. Considering the baseball calendar, only candidates who can start by February 1st will be considered for the class of 2023.
Responsibilities:
• Provide content for each Major League advance report throughout the 2023 MLB season
• Conduct thorough and proactive research, specifically through video and data analysis, to obtain relevant information regarding upcoming opponents
• Clearly and concisely present findings to a variety of audiences, including the ML coaches and ML operations staff
• Complete each report promptly, under the guidance of the Major League Operations department and Major League coaching staff
• Assist in the collection and distribution of scouting video as it relates to the MLB Dugout iPad program or ad hoc staff requests
• Proactively consider and prepare for late adjustments (e.g. injuries, call-ups, rotation adjustments, etc.) to advance reports
• Assist with various Baseball Operations projects as requested by relevant staff
• Projects may focus on several areas including Scouting, Research & Development, Player Development, or general Baseball Operations
• Participate actively in our internship development program
• Complete projects geared toward front-office skill development and personal development goals
• Create presentations, host class sessions, complete required readings and podcast listening to be prepared for each meeting
Interns in this role can expect to:
• Execute projects from start to finish
• Take an active role in improving current processes by thinking beyond the minimum needs to accomplish a task and voicing suggestions
• Build on your current skills and knowledge base
• Develop relevant technical skills, broaden understanding of baseball concepts and processes, and explore additional relevant topics
• Operate in a self-directed manner with minimal oversight
• Communicate directly and effectively with staff, players, and coaches to build meaningful relationships
Qualifications:
• Domain knowledge of the game, preferably through prior playing experience or relevant work experience
• Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining professionalism at all times
• Ability to work non-traditional and flexible hours per the baseball schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
• Proficiency in Excel; SQL & R Studio programming experience preferred
• Available to start by February 1st, 2023
