OBJECTIVE:
In one of the museum's oldest positions, the Director of Phillip Music is responsible for leading the museum's vibrant and historical Phillips Music series - a season of 25 plus concerts that began in 1941-that brings acclaimed artists from around the globe to perform amid the unique setting of The Phillips Collection Music Room, as well as other music programs relating to the Phillips's permanent collection and its special exhibitions.
The Director of Phillips Music also organizes a secondary series, Leading International Composers, working in direct collaboration with embassies in Washington and academic/university partners to present the work of the world's foremost living composers. The Director of Phillips Music leads all aspects related to digital engagement involving music, including oversight and direction of the digital presentation of concerts, production of digital content, and spearheads the growth of new digital audiences.
The Director of Phillips Music also produces scholarly work that highlights the many connections between art and music within the permanent collection and collaborates directly with public programming and curatorial departments to create synergistic programming and interdisciplinary project work in line with The Phillips Collection's strategic goals. The Director of Phillips Music actively cultivates and nurtures donor relationships current and future in collaboration with the Advancement department.
DUTIES:
Develop the Phillips Music series, selecting and contracting with managers and artist to perform for the series with strict adherence to artistic excellence and in alignment with institutional strategy.
Develop the Leading International Composers series in collaboration with embassies in Washington, D.C. and partnering with local universities to produce master classes with featured composers.
Develop interdisciplinary programming that aligns music with the visual arts, including new commissioning, in-gallery activations, and cross-departmental collaborative projects.
Provide oversight and strategic direction to digital live-streaming production.
Manage the Concerts & Production manager position and provide oversight to concert logistics and operations.
Prepare and monitor annual budgets for the Phillips Music series.
Serve as host for Phillips Music concerts, the contemporary series and other events such as fundraising galas and memorial concerts, offering introductory remarks.
Actively develop and engage with concert audiences, working with the Advancement department on potential fundraising opportunities, including the cultivation of new and servicing of existing Season Sponsors and the Phillips Chamber Society-the museum's leading music supporters.
Serve as key liaison between donors and Advancement on growing the concert underwriting program.
Nurture relationships with the Washington artistic and diplomatic community which will enhance the museum's visibility in Washington and beyond.
Work directly with museum's pro-bono attorneys to manage and oversee US visas for international artists appearing at the Phillips.
Orient and assist performing artists throughout their engagement at the Phillips.
Supervise the process of creating music web pages, printed concert programs, and weekly Music eNews, including generating written content.
Work with the Head of Design, Marketing & Communications, and the Concerts & Production Manager on the annual season brochure, including written content and choice of the visual theme drawn from the permanent collection.
Manage and care for The Phillips Collection's permanent music archives.
Work proactively with Phillips security personnel to ensure the safety of the art, the artists, and visitors during concerts.
