Variety is seeking an experienced Associate Editor, Legal & Finance for its Focus team, which produces specialized industry sections and oversees extensive awards season coverage. This role is distinct from the news desk and web team but involves collaboration on various initiatives.
The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with the entertainment legal community, business managers, and their respective PR teams. Responsibilities include overseeing key annual reports such as Legal Impact, Business Managers Elite, In-House Legal Elite, Music Legal Elite, Dealmakers Impact Report, and New Leaders.
Candidates should be detail-oriented, highly organized, and well-acquainted with the entertainment legal and business management communities. Presentation skills, such as moderating panels, conducting interviews, and representing Variety at public events, are advantageous. Creative thinking and the ability to generate new business opportunities are also appreciated.
This Los Angeles-based role requires a minimum of four days in the office per week. The editor will be responsible for assigning, editing, writing profiles, and proofreading content. Prior experience covering the legal aspects of Hollywood is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assign and track stories to freelancers or staff.
• Manage deadlines and collaborate with the photo department for visuals.
• Edit for clarity, grammar, and focus, and write headlines and captions.
• Post stories on Variety.com.
Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 years' experience in print publishing.
• Excellent multitasking skills to manage multiple deadlines.
• Familiarity with InCopy, Microsoft Office, and WordPress is beneficial.
• Strong proofreading skills and a good understanding of the entertainment industry are essential, alongside a proactive and collaborative approach.
As PMC values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite 4 days a week and 1 day remotely with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture.
Typical wage range: $85K - $95K. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
