Associate Principal Counsel (Rights Management) - PH
Job Summary:
We are seeking an attorney with experience in copyright/intellectual property, in particular rights analysis, drafting and negotiation, to join our Walt Disney Studio legal team on a project with anticipated project length of 12 months, subject to extension.
Responsibilities:
Principal duties will include: reviewing motion picture chain-of-title; advising creative and business departments on historical information relating to Studio's motion picture rights; preparing memos regarding status of rights and rights summaries; working with more senior studio attorney and intellectual property counsel to analyze all copyright issues associated with the exercise of rights in Studio motion pictures, including potential termination rights, abend and other copyright reversion issues, and public domain; maintaining rights files and databases; and assisting the team with other special projects as may be necessary from time to time.
As a member of our legal affairs team, in addition to rights analysis and rights project management, you will also act as a key negotiator working on behalf of Studio leadership in drafting and negotiating motion picture rights agreements. You will manage important relationships with our business and entertainment partners and advise business leadership and senior legal executives on transactional and strategic issues relating to motion picture rights.
Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 years of significant legal experience, with 3 years preferably in areas of intellectual property. Familiarity with motion picture business and legal issues required.
• Superior written and oral communication skills, including experience dealing with senior management and clients and ability to distill complicated legal concepts into non-legal terminology.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well in a team environment.
• Project management experience.
• Ability to evaluate and reconcile issues from the business-unit and enterprise level perspective.
• Ability to prioritize and take initiative, maintain attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, with the ability to follow through on numerous projects.
• Ability to work in an environment with a high degree of confidentiality.
• Capable of managing changing priorities & deadline pressure.
Required Education
JD degree. Admission to California State Bar Association (or willingness and qualification to be Registered In-House Counsel)
